Someone clever once said, “Good music either makes you remember everything, or forget everything” – and I agree fully. Music is like an anchor to a moment in time. The right song has the ability to crack your heart open, and connect you with something bigger than yourself. Naturally, it played a major role in our big day.
I spent hours tracking down the songs that meant something to us and our journey, that we could incorporate into our day. It wasn’t that easy. A lot of the moving songs we’re drawn to are also the melancholy ones, usually inspired by heartache of some sort – and on closer inspection, don’t really have wedding appropriate lyrics. I’ll never forget being at a wedding where the bride walked down the aisle to ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele – all about a break up! Given that the couple were not English speaking it’s easy to understand why – but still, you really don’t want someone singing “Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead” as you’re about to say your vows. The right lyrics are important and usually overlooked.
I put together this list of (mostly) Indie songs for weddings – some old, some new – all with (hopefully) wedding appropriate lyrics. Please feel free to follow along, I’ll be updating it regularly.
